Joel Lanir completed his BSc in Information Systems at the Technion, his MSc in Human Factors from Ben-Gurion University, and his PhD in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He is currently an associate professor and the head of the Information Systems department. His research interests lie in the general areas of human-computer interaction and information visualization, and more specifically, mobile and context-aware computing, design and use of technology for cultural heritage, and the design and evaluation of novel technologies. His research was supported by the European Union (FP7, Horizon 2020), the Israel Science Foundation, Israel’s chief scientist, and more.

יואל לניר השלים תואר ראשון במערכות מידע בטכניון, תואר שני בהנדסת אנוש מאוניברסיטת בן־גוריון בנגב, ותואר דוקטור במדעי המחשב מאוניברסיטת בריטיש קולומביה בוונקובר, קנדה. פרופ׳ לניר מכהן כיום כראש החוג למערכות מידע. תחומי העניין המחקריים שלו מצויים בתחומים הכלליים של אינטראקציה אדם–מחשב והדמיית מידע, ובאופן ממוקד יותר במחשוב נייד ומודע־הקשר, בתכנון ושימוש בטכנולוגיה עבור מורשת תרבותית, ובעיצוב והערכה של טכנולוגיות חדשניות. מחקריו נתמכו על ידי האיחוד האירופי (FP7, Horizon 2020), הקרן הלאומית למדע, המדען הראשי של מדינת ישראל וגופים נוספים.
