About

Mor Peleg completed a BSc and MSc degrees in biology and PhD in Information Systems, from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and postdoctoral studies at Stanford’s Medical Informatics program. She is Full Professor at the Department of Information Systems, University of Haifa, which she chaired for a number of years, and Founding Chair of the University of Haifa’s AI and Data Science Center (https://dsrc.haifa.ac.il). She is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics and is Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics and of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics.Peleg is internationally renowned in the area of clinical decision support, with a focus on using ontologies to integrate patient data with clinical knowledge. She led the large-scale European project MobiGuide. Her current research exploits machine learning and LLMs with ontologies, behavioral theories and evidence based guidelines for clinical decision support for multi-morbidity patients. Additional areas of research include discovering disease progression pathways and LLM-based ontology learning.

Academic Background

Mor Peleg holds BSc and MSc degrees in Biology. Her MSc focused on Molecular Biology under the supervision of Prof. Haim Manor. She completed her PhD in Information Systems at the Technion under the supervision of Prof. Dov Dori. Her thesis addressed the development and evaluation of a graphical modeling language for real-time systems and development of a compiler that compiles the representation into C++ language. She completed her postdoctoral training in the BioMedical Informatics Program at Stanford University, where she worked with Prof. Ted Shortliffe and Samson Tu on developing GLIF3, a language for modeling and executing clinical guidelines, and with Prof. Russ Altman on developing a language for modeling biological processes and validating them using Petri nets. Mor continued to work as a visiting professor at Stanford University in 2007–2009, 2016–2017, and every summer between 2006 and 2014. She held summer sabbaticals at Columbia University in New York in 2004 and 2026, at the University of Pavia in Italy (2015), and two-month sabbaticals at Macquarie University in Sydney (2025) and in Zhejiang University in China (2026).After completing her fellowship at Stanford, she was appointed as a senior lecturer in the Department of Information Systems at the University of Haifa, and served as Chair of the Department in 2009–2012. During that time, she led the transformation of the department’s program into a BSc and changed the department’s name to “Information Systems”—a department with a technological rather than a management orientation. From 2007 to 2020 she served on the editorial board of the journal Methods of Information in Medicine. Since 2012 she has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics, became an Associate Editor in 2014, and since 2021 serves as Editor-in-Chief. In 2017–2019 she established the undergraduate BSc program in Data Science—a program based on foundations from three disciplines: information systems, computer science, and statistics. The program was shared by the three departments and is now jointly run by the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences. She directed the program from 2019 to 2021. In parallel with establishing the BSc program, in 2019 she founded—and continues to direct—the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Research Center (https://dsrc.haifa.ac.il/), which was supported in its first seven years by the Council for Higher Education. The center supports multidisciplinary research and conferences in data science and artificial intelligence. In 2011–2015 Mor led a major European research project called MobiGuide, which focused on developing a distributed decision-support system for patients in their home environment and for their physicians, integrating data from hospital electronic health records with data from patients’ mobile sensors and smartphones. The project involved 13 organizations from five countries, with 60 researchers and developers, and achieved considerable success in its implementations in the domain of gestational diabetes in Spain and in atrial fibrillation in Italy. Other large projects in which she participated as a principal investigator included an NIH project within the Conte Center for Computational Systems Genomics of Neuropsychiatric Phenotypes, where she studied autism phenotypes and comorbid conditions. Another major European project in which she served as a principal investigator (2020–2025) was the CAncer PAtients Better Life Experience project, in which she implemented GoCom, where her research focused on implementing a computational method for resolving conflicts among drug therapies for patients with multiple diseases, developed as part of research funded by the Israel Science Foundation (ISF). Within the CAPABLE project, she also developed a new method that helps patients develop health habits by combining machine learning with clinical guidelines and behavioral theories. In recent years, she began collaborating with a research group in China on mining patient data (from medical records and medical imaging) to discover disease progression pathways with the aim of improving patient prognosis. The criteria for nomination include significant scientific productivity in informatics prior to reaching eligibility for fellowship in the College of Informatics; multiple significant scientific publications and demonstrated commitment to AMIA.
